danish firms LETH & GORI and EMA collaborated to create ‘forfatterhuset kindergarten’, a competition proposal for a school in copenhagen, denmark. two mature trees which inhabit the site are the starting point of the design and are integrated into the structure by wrapping the spaces around them. a central courtyard containing one tree becomes part of the daily interactions inside the classrooms and spaces. its presence mediates the boundary between inside and outside while the second tree leads from the courtyard towards the playground.
wind rustles the branches and daylight filters through the canopy to generate a dappled illumination inside the school. this atmosphere contains rich and diverse areas to play, learn and relax while supporting the children’s physical and educational development.
