make architects has completed the ‘weihai pavilion’ on the coast of shandong peninsula in northern china as a welcoming and information center for a new housing development. the temporary facility will include an event space, hosting launches, reception and meeting rooms, a display area, a small bar, cinema and offices. visitors are greeted at the concave side of a one-storey high elliptical section embedded within a larger concentric crescent structure focused around a circular fountain.
the darker entrance volume is defined by a curved load bearing wall clad in vertical strips of bamboo. just on the other side of the partition the roof is revealed to sweep up towards the sky framing a 180-degree view of the sea through a large curtain wall. thin horizontal boards hang from the steel canopy to hide the mechanical fixtures and integrate curvilinear voids to allow hidden artificial lights to illuminate the interior.
