designed to improve the transportation infrastructure at the former tunstall station opened in 1888, the renamed ‘nunawading station’ by international firm grimshaw architects upgrades safety and commute times for the 50,000 vehicles and 218 daily trains in the eastern suburbs of melbourne. originally crossing the transverse springvale road, the railway drastically impeded the flow of traffic. the new scheme layers each facet of public transport, separating them to streamline fluidity and making them equally accessible through efficient architectural urban planning. the renovated interchange facility includes an elevated concourse, pedestrian connections, and bus interchange facilities.
two large canopy wings hover over the ground, connecting a 45-meter underpass. massive roof planes are held high into the air by a single line of centrally located column trees, and are punctured with skylights to illuminate the sub-grade environments. ‘ETFE’ pillows are used throughout the project in place of glass to provide a more durable and cost-effective solution to light and weather filtration. prefabricated service structures on grade are clad in highly resistant enamel panels and constitute the staff and retail amenities and waiting rooms. the subterranean tunnel is flooded with daylight from the perforated metal sections filling rhythmic voids in the entrance level above.
