girona-based practice 05 AM arquitectura has recently completed the ‘baluster lattice house’, a once dilapidated residence
in vallvidrera, near barcelona, spain. a pivoting door addressing the street is the new entrance, unveiling a cascade
of south-facing terraces which defines the exterior of this dwelling. a motif of balusters derived from the original facade
screens an outdoor dining terrace from direct afternoon sun, while instilling the character of the original structure.
a white cane lattice serves as a canopy above the open-air lounge.
the open plan of the ground floor creates unbroken views through the common areas. three cubes are placed to separate the
programmatic spaces, containing either the staircase, a built-in bookcase or fireplace. pocket and concealed panel doors
may be pulled from the volumes to provide privacy as necessary. at the top of the stairway on the first level, dwellers are presented
with a square room of closed doors and drawers capped with a vaulted ceiling culminating with a skylight for illumination.
storage and portals to bedrooms are revealed as the doors are opened.
