winchester-based firm AR design studio has recently completed ‘lighthouse 65’, a residence along the coast of wight, an island to the south of the united kingdom. positioned 7 meters below street level, the dwelling’s roof is used as a parking deck for the owner’s vehicles. a transparent cube atop the structure serves as the main entrance and also illuminates in various colors to serve as a beacon to passing boaters. a glowing red light represents sudden drop in atmospheric pressure leading to storms while green illustrates fair weather.
upon entering the glass enclosed vestibule, a spiral steel staircase leads downwards to the living spaces. concealed within a concrete core, the structural center also supports the large cantilevered roof which shades the ground floor and veranda. a wide elevation maximizes ocean views from every room.
