paris-based practice influx_studio has shared with us images of ‘spiral garden museum’, their entry into the design competition for the new taipei city museum in the capital of taiwan. seeking to create an iconic structure that will define the current cultural identity of the city, the proposal utilizes a spiralling, cork-screw form that is outfitted with a continuous walkway, inviting visitors to experience the art as as well as the surrounding landscape of the park.
view of spiral garden
using the circulation of the people as a focal point of the design, the museum was conceived as a natural extension of the park’s pathways. a spiral ramp scales up the museum’s facade to eventually lead to an outdoor art terrace on the roof level. set at a maximum inclination of 4%, the circular route integrates a garden strip that further extends the natural elements of the park into the architecture. a 360 degree view of the landscape is established throughout the circuit of the green way.

the ascending spiral garden organizes vertically the internal exhibition space and the structure of the museum, providing both internal and external access to a number of programs. a system of vertical mobile and pliable lamellas enable maximum flexibility of the exhibit rooms, allowing a wide variety of installations and exhibition layouts.
