japanese architecture practice studio 2A (miya akiko) has shared with us images of ‘house K’, a multi-storey private residence for a family of three in kanagawa, japan. exploring a new way of defining areas and individual programs, the design consists of 13 wood panels that have been angled using a polar coordinate system, dividing domestic space at an open and human scale.

situated in a generous and lush plot of land, the hexagonal form of the house was determined by the freestanding panels which have have been organized on a 30 degree system. the exterior surface has been wrapped in laminated glass, resulting in a wholly transparent residence where the garden can be projected on to the volume. a direct dialogue between the interior and the exterior is also established with the angled layout facilitating a new view of the garden.

the first level of the structure is partially dug into the ground, establishing an eye-level view of the garden beyond. a spiral staircase serves as the core mode of circulation throughout the house. singularly finished in light-toned wood, the interior space benefits from a unified atmosphere. the angled partition panels loosely define the floors, creating a porous layout that encourages visual and audio connection for the inhabitants. a void in the first floor further maintains a sense of association between levels.
