neil poulton pierces eraclea for artemide with circular void image courtesy of artemide
‘eraclea’ is a monolithic lighting design pierced by a large circular hole, an intentional reference to early 20th century english sculptor barbara hepworth, created by scottish-born paris-based designer neil poulton for italian lighting manufacturer artemide. as daylight fades, the physical mass of ‘eraclea’ dematerializes into shadows and the seemingly empty hole metamorphosizes into a suspended crescent moon, magically floating in mid air. ‘eraclea’ is an outdoor lighting fixture intended for use in driveways, parks and gardens. housed in a concrete body, it incorporates 12W LED technology, is ip65 certified, weatherproof, frost proof, shock resistant and requires no maintenance once installed. ‘eraclea’ measures 80 x 51 x 13cm. the light was presented during milan design week 2011.
