through her work, japanese photographer rinko kawauchi presents a flowing, fragmentary depiction of everyday life depicting fleeting scenes and small objects. her newest series ‘a glimmer in silence’ are also less than spectacular – capturing a light reflected in a mirror, a small frog sitting on a hand, fish in a plastic bag… kawauchi’s work alludes to the relationship between people and the manifestations of animate and inanimate nature as well as the basic experiences of human kind the transience of life, birth and death.
artistically, her motifs, for the most part, are shot in natural light, drawing their poetic character from her subtle use of light and color with a focus on the ephemeral – poetry and emotion are fused with images of fleeting beauty, frequently with melancholic undertones.
