in the final segment of the three-part series, designboom follows up on the coverage of the 2013 ferrari FF, taking a behind the scenes look at ferrari’s prestigious tailor-made program. we’ve had the exclusive opportunity to experience first hand what it’s like to personalize and order a one-of-a-kind ferrari FF at the unique facility in maranello, italy. the tailor-made program continues a tradition which began in the 1950s and 1960s, a time when clients customized their vehicles with premium materials, colors and finishes. the result was genuinely bespoke cars designed to suit the desires of each individual owner. that esteemed past has now been revived through a program that permits owners to specify every last detail of their ferrari, from the exterior to the cabin trim, through a library of finishes, accessories, materials, treatments and colorways.

each of the available finishes are developed in collaboration with the ferrari styling center, each drawing historical reference from the company’s core values of elegance and innovation. any client who desires to embark on the tailor-made program is assisted and guided through the selection process by architect and designer tommaso cai, who is in charge of ensuring the final designs are both unique and in-line with the ferrari brand and its traditions. once the car’s details have been defined, the client can follow-up on all of the various processes involved in its creation, including the paint application and seat upholstery, right until their custom prancing horse is finalized and delivered.

the tailor-made program offers three collections influenced directly by ferrari’s trademark DNA: scuderia, classica and inedita. the ‘scuderia’ collection is informed by ferrari’s sporting history, offering a choice of racing-derived materials, finishes and accents. the ‘classica’ collection, on the other hand, provides a modern twist on the styling cues and features of maranello’s iconic GT’s. at last, ‘inedita’ lives up to its name by introducing an element of experimentation and innovation. users are able to select from a range of traditional and luxury materials, from cashmere to denim, to high-tech fabrics and innovative carbon-fiber composites.

the ‘scuderia’ collection pays homage to ferrari’s racing history, reflected in the materials and finishes it includes. the list of options ranges from carbon-fiber trim to technical fabrics, chamois and rubberized leather, alcantara, microfibers, kevlar, satin-finish and matte metals.

the use of the latest materials and production techniques are implemented into the ‘classica’ collection. the list features pastel colors from the past, aged and vintage leather, wools, cashmere and velvet. special treatments for the hard areas of the cabin to match the exterior also include chromed elements, stitching details and more natural leathers.

inedita’ introduces innovative fabrics and experimental approaches to interior car design, while still respecting the core values of the brand. denim, bold leather upholstery, suit and technical fabrics are just a few of the novel and intriguing options available. the denim-trimmed ferrari california is a good example of what the collection offers: pale blue leather with denim trim in areas of the seats and cockpit, as well as on the door panels and lower part of the dashboard.
