‘grid system’ by ying chang is a furniture series that takes the two dimensional grid, typically used to organize graphical layouts, and applies it towards three-dimensional spaces. in doing so, the concept manifests itself as a functional table composed of modules specific to the preferences of the user. mesh boxes are available in three sizes with different storage capacities that correspond to various everyday objects: an A3 plane, an A4 square section, and an A5 section. thus, consumers have complete control over every aspect of the configuration. after the nylon powder-coated steel meshes are slid into place, steel frames and aluminum rods form structural supports to transfer carried loads from component to component. providing accents of color to the furnishing are colored shelves that help set a hierarchy amongst books, pens, and other daily materials. meanwhile, the top surface can be utilized for cooking, reading, working, or relaxing. on his ethos for the project, chang said, ‘as living spaces get smaller and merge with working spaces, the use of tables, desks and shelving are evolving, yet their basic forms remain largely unchanged.’
