on the occasion of milan design week 2016, 5vie art+design has produced a special exhibition — ‘herringbones’ by israeli designers yael mer and shay alkalay of london-based studio raw edges. the installation shows the research and results of the designers’ ongoing experimentation with colored dye, highlighting the distinct textures and patterns revealed when applied to wooden materials.

curated by federica sala/PS, the show illustrates the techniques and tools used to develop the herringbone effect, where individual slats of wood are hand-dipped in vibrantly-hued ink, and manually assembled into a versatile and adaptive sequence of dynamic arrangements. while this type of patterning is most commonly applied to textiles and fabrics, the effect on wood translates the decorative and layered characteristics of weaving to the context of interior schemes.

often distinguished by its distinct approach to material experimentation, raw edges continues this methodology for the exhibit in milan, with a focus on the idea of perpetual movement and the study of patterns and shapes.

‘what impresses me about herringbones is the concept of perpetual pattern, recurring pattern, pattern of patterns, that is what covers the surrounding world, no matter if in a planned or casual way, by transforming it in another world, combining any possible shape or pattern, curator federica sala says. ‘it is like a mathematical analysis on the interaction variables between lines and curves.’
