people’s industrial design office has developed a 3D scanning booth that can instantly digitize a wide range of subjects. the studio — the design branch of beijing-based firm people’s architecture office — has erected a temporary structure that surrounds objects with a spherical array of fixed focal length DSLR cameras. inside the ‘3D copypod’, each camera is attached to a node of the isokinetic pavilion.

inspired by the work of chuck hoberman, people’s industrial design office has configured the scheme so that it can expand and contract as desired. with minimal adjustment, the structure can be enlarged to scan a group of people, or shrink to create 3D scans of smaller objects.
the structure surrounds its objects with a spherical array of cameras
illuminated from within, folding panels enclose the structure to ensure a shadowless environment. the resulting images can then be used to construct digital models and high resolution 3D prints. ‘with the snap of a camera, even subjects in motion can be captured in high quality and full color,’ says the design team.
