in a proposed scenario where earth colonizes mars, which flag should be used to represent our diverse planet? how can the entire globe — our cultures, belief systems, geographies and languages — be minimized to a single graphic composition? for his graduation project at beckmans college of design, oskar pernefeldt envisions ‘the international flag of planet earth‘ as a symbol for the entire world.

the graphic has been designed to illustrate a meeting point for our vast system of societies. centered in the flag, seven rings form a flower — a symbol of life on earth. the rings are linked to each other, metaphorically reflecting the intrinsic interconnectedness of our planet. an azure background represents water, essential for life, and the flower’s interlaced outer rings form a circle.

the proposal, aside from being a fascinating glimpse into the future of ‘graphic design’, seeks ‘to remind the people of earth that we share this planet, no matter of national boundaries. that we should take care of each other and the planet we live on‘, pernefeldt describes.
