co-founder and lead designer, eric de feo, of ohneka farms refers to the company’s project ‘root’ as, ‘a way for people to experience the farm without being at the farm every day.’ the smart hydroponic device is space-efficient, easy-to-use gardening system that can hold up to 16 vegetables, herbs, or flowers with no dirt or pesticides.

the construct is powered by an LED light system that has been optimized to accelerate growth. the technology has the ability to adjust to the atmosphere, changing its illumination in relation to the time of day. below the diffuser, the body features pockets in which users can place pods with various plants. once water has been poured into the top opening, the garden can be synced wireless with an app for custom settings such as sleep time and the amount of hydration necessary.
the body fits within one square foot
the prototype was 3D printed out of nylon at shapeways in new york city. after testing functionality of ‘root’ for three years using PVC piping, ohneka farms is excited to share their final design. the project is currently seeking funding on indiegogo here.
