in an effort to motivate children to use bicycle helmetsdesign and innovation firm MOEF has created protective head gear in the shape of a LEGO figure’s hair. wanting to mimic the proportions and physical characteristics of the original plastic toy as closely as possible, the team digitized it using 3D scanning, which allowed them to scale, design and 3D print the hair style in larger dimensions.

MOEF was approached by advertising agency DDB to design the prototype, looking towards possible production. the carefully sculpted hair identically replicates the minifig toy’s bowl-cut locks, while a safety strap finalizes the protective gear. an accompanying video showing the prototype in process illustrates the development of the design, while offering insight into the idea’s conception — every fifth hour a child sustains a serious head injury while riding a bike, and research revealed that 44% of children do not wear a helmet. the final product, painted in the same color as the original hair, creates a clearly recognizable wearable that children would voluntary use — as well as sparking the interest of quirky adults.
