designed in collaboration with hella jongerius, KLM royal dutch airlines have unveiled their new world business class cabin layout. aiming to accentuate the at-home feeling for business class – the interior features new carpeting, panel decorations, curtains, lighting, blankets, cushions and upholstery. the new chairs offer customers optimum comfort, reclining horizontally so the passenger can lie fully flat. additionally, the seat position in the cabin and the partition between television screens ensure greater privacy for users.

keeping sustainability in mind, the carpeting, for instance, is manufactured partly of discarded KLM ladies’ uniforms. the dutch airline recycles all of its discarded carpets in collaboration with carpet manufacturer desso based on the cradle-to-cradle principle. july 2013 will see the inaugural flight of the first KLM 747-400 aircraft with the new interior design configuration.
‘it’s a brilliant opportunity for me to design the cabin interior and the new business class seat for KLM. the challenge is one of safeguarding individual comfort in amiable settings using innovations. in so doing, I can optimally combine traditional details, and my industrial textile and color skills with high-tech functionality.’ states hella jongerius
