the contemporary dining space is a melting pot of different cultures, customs and traditions — a place where colors and patterns, smells and sounds, tastes and textures, bring forth a multi-ethnic culinary experience that heightens the senses. this is what communication research centre fabrica wanted to express in their collaboration with atipico.

‘a table’ stands to represent different cultural traditions revolving around food

made entirely in italy, ‘a table’ was born out of the different food habits and nationalities represented by the young creatives at fabrica, who are native to such countries as china, egypt, england, finland, france, germany, india, italy, japan, morocco and scotland. the collection of objects and accessories for preparing and consuming food include baskets, bowls, carafes, cutlery, cutting boards, glasses, plates and linen. each one of the pieces has been envisioned with characteristics that are reminiscent of various cultural eating and drinking traditions: the shape of the glasses remind one of the cups used in japanese tea ceremonies; the aperitif set draws on the indian practice of sharing and tasting many different foods; while linen — aprons, kitchen gloves, runners and various tablecloths — borrow colors and patterns from antique porcelain; additionally marked by symbols denoting the countries which encouraged the designs.

each piece has been influenced by a different culture, but collectively they are a cohesive set of tableware

the concluding set of objects employs a range of materials such as ceramic, fabric, glass, metal and wood, and collectively form a coherent collection that coordinates each piece aesthetically, as well as functionally.

as sam baron, creative director of the design area of fabrica, says, ‘the table is the perfect place for meeting up. at fabrica, place of exchange and interchange par excellence, we love to mix our different cultures and backgrounds to create design projects which are a pure manifestation of the daily creative work and which become a source of personal growth and enrichment for our residents. at fabrica design is seen as a praxis which, through various abilities and skills, leads to a common language‘.
