seeking to reimagine the architectural language of industrial buildings, french company bacacier has teamed up with designer philippe starck to develop the 3S metal cladding system. the series is comprised of five different panel types, an outer layer of ‘cassettes’, and custom attachment detailing, and has been presented at the fall edition of maison et objet 2014.
the system is based on an initial cladding layer and allows for the possibility of outer ‘cassette’ panels
the project’s efforts were motivated by the technical and aesthetic monotony of industrial buildings that has existed for the last 50 years. the 3S system offers a high level of customization by utilizing a mecanno, or kit-of-parts, approach, which includes standardized horizontal rails, traditional construction techniques, a variety of color choices, and the possibility for an outer layer of ‘cassette’ panels. an identifying element in the system is the use of custom double-threaded self-tapping screws, which eliminate the need for pre-drilling during installation and result in a refined aesthetic.

the ‘végétal’ panel is identified by its curving creased patterning
