The French luxury brand, Hermès, in collaboration with designboom organizes a graphic international design competition for its masculine pillar perfume line, Terre d’Hermès.
Even since its launch in 2006, Terre d’Hermès has become a classic of men’s fine fragrances. Every year, a new design in limited edition decorates both bottle and case, telling the singularity of its universe and its codes, and emphasising the graphic strength of the bottle.
00 – Preamble – Terre d’Hermès
Hermès Parfumeur, an Hermès craft
- Creative freedom as a credo
- A founding relation to material (a craftsmanship tradition)
- Perfumes as stories opening to an imaginary
The world of Terre d’Hermès
A universal story of men. An Hermès story.
Between earth and sky, the founding story of man’s relation to nature.
An experience passing through the sensory pleasure of matter.
- Alchemy of elements
- Nurturing nature
- Creative force of transforming material
Terre d’Hermès Bottle
Created in 2006 by Philippe Mouquet, long-time accomplice of Hermès, the bottle is a reinterpretation of a flask that was part of an historic travel “necessaire” in the Hermès collection.
-Verticality
-Architecture
-Timeless elegance
-Details
Strong values for a bottle drawing strength in the earth and rises to the sky.
On the earth side, its base is an orange H, iconic print of the house.
On the sky side, light is reflected on its metallic shoulders.
A bottle revealing selfish details to the user
Terre d’Hermès case
A very masculine sobriety.
An harmony of brown tones echoing the earth.
The affirmation of a name through a classic typography.

Unexpected Terre d’Hermès limited edition – bottle and box
First introduced in 2007, H bottle Terre d’Hermès limited editions have since become a real saga awaited by collectors.
Through their daring and singular designs, they put a new light on the Terre d’Hermès bottle every year with a new narrative and/or graphic design.
During more than 10 years, the guiding thread of this saga has been the H of Hermès, enhancing the bottle architecture with force and elegance (see all the saga part 13).
As part of this contest, we invite you to imagine new designs as a continuation or as a rupture with the existing ones
(in terms of drawing style, codes, materials and technique).
Those designs, with a free graphic expression, must create an emotion and an immediate comprehension for the client.
They have to:
- be in direct line with the universe and the codes of Terre d’Hermès
- correspond to the creation values of the house
Lastly, if your project is designed for a series of bottles (2 to 3 bottles composing a design – like in 2012 for example), each bottle must be able to live autonomously.
In a technical viewpoint, creations must be thought according to the specified printing decoration areas, in order to ensure the feasibility of the project.
So…
… Experienced designers,
Students,
Passionate about arts and/or perfumes,
Faithful users of Terre d’Hermès
…this competition is for you.
Surprise us! Express a personal and original look on our masculine fragrance Terre d’Hermès, to make it even more unexpected for a year.

Terre d’Hermès
An eau between earth and sky.
'A mineral and woody scent in which cedar wood and vetiver express verticality. Symbolic image of a man with his feet on the ground and his head in the stars, a strong but daydreaming man. The mineral aspect underlines the audacity of this man, and is in harmony with cold spices (pepper and baies roses) and grapefruit, innovative freshness of this eau de toilette in which softness is also transmitted with benzoin.'
