as the semakau landfill, singapore’s last garbage disposal site, is filling up fast, young photographer zinkie aw decided to bring awareness to the issue through a collection of images entitled ‘republic of pulau semakau‘. the portraits had the people of singapore hidden behind their dustbins, showing their garbage instead of their faces. it was through each person’s discarded belongings that aw created an ‘identity autopsy’ as she explored the importance of the contents as well as the impact of each person on the environment.

aw is one of 42 aspiring artists currently displaying their work at the goodman arts centre gallery as part of noise singapore‘s
apprenticeship programme exhibition. the show runs until march 4th, 2012.
