‘re-connecting time’, the permanently displayed exhibition by artist hu shaoming at the guangzhou art academy showcases four different antique devices which have been painstakingly conceived to expose the hidden gears and mechanisms of the various vintage technologies with a stationary metal zipper. disassembled, then put together one by one, the collection sees the reconstruction of a phone from the 1910s, a clock from the 1920s, a camera from the 1930s, and a portable film camera from the 1940s – each of which originated from different parts of the world. ultimately, the project reveals a hidden world, where the perfection and beauty of old working components and objects demonstrate an era and history of ingenuity.
