a mystical, galaxy-eyed visage peers out from the face of the ushuaïa ibiza beach hotel. surrounded by geometric shapes, the face — a joint effort between artists felipe pantone & okuda san miguel — slowly melts into a sequence of vibrant rainbows and is eventually reduced to a series of striking black and white lines. the piece wraps itself around the main extension of the hotel’s façade and marks the first of a series of large-scale street art installations commissioned by energy drink ‘burn’.

the mural is part of a larger campaign of street art interventions entitled ‘wallburners’, produced by street art gallery ink and movement to celebrate the rebranding of the popular beverage. begun by felipe pantone and okuda san miguel, the two artists will in turn invite further contribution from muralists and graffiti artists of their choice, creating a pass-the-parcel like tapestry of permanent artworks that completely envelop the face of the ushuaïa ibiza beach hotel. best know for organizing EDM and dance events, burn is presenting the ongoing artwork alongside a program of concerts and music sets headed by a selection of top DJs and producers.

the face that makes up the center of the piece is undeniably the work of san miguel. the artist’s iconic, looming creations are instantly recognizable for their geometric shapes and brilliant, multicolored palettes, but are most notable for the strange maturity that always lies beneath. behind the colorful exterior, san miguel’s creations are eerily sentient, hiding some disconcerting cosmic wisdom that they always seem just on the brink of imparting — should you stare at them long enough. felipe pantone is responsible for the glitchy interventions, the strong black lines and vibrant swerves that undercut the piece. if san miguel’s colors are playful, pantone’s are jarringly futuristic. using harsh contrast and strange perspectives, pantone skillfully skews the viewer’s gaze, bombarding them with psychedelic shapes and patterns that refuse the eye a solid purchase.
