in a twist on her regular choice medium, mandy smith has used a kind of paper more familiar to builders and DIY enthusiasts – sandpaper. in a juxtaposition of play and pain the artist has crafted intricate and realistic everyday objects out of sheets of the abrasive matter. with a slightly sinister undertone, the whimsical items–a toilet paper roll, a playground slide, bed, bikini, sneakers, bike–are rendered in three-dimensions from the coarse material, and are brought to life by photographer bruno drummond, who has arranged the sculptures in domestic settings to give them context.
