for its 100th issue, cahiers d’art — one of the foremost publishers of the visual arts of the 20th century — celebrates with issue no. 1, 2014, an edition dedicated to the works and writings of hiroshi sugimoto.

the volume is based around a story written by the renowned japanese artist for his exhibition at the palais de tokyo entitled ‘the world is dead today’. the exhibit features photographic works juxtaposed against his own antiques collection, narrating the end of modernity. the cover of the publication is distinguished by a singular photograph of marcel duchamp’s work which, staffan ahrenberg, the publisher of cahiers d’art says has been ‘an enormous honor‘. the pages read as a stunning spread of the artist’s own writing, alongside never before seen images of his work, his collection, and installation views of the exhibition. in the tradition of cahiers d’art, the publishing house has allowed the sugimoto freedom in determining the interplay between text and image, which allows for a more intimate window onto his practice and his thinking. serpentine gallery co-director hans ulrich obrist interviewed sugimoto for the issue and akiko miki, chief curator of palais de tokyo, has contributed a text on the artist’s work.

on the occasion of 100th issue release, cahiers d’art presents an exhibition of sugimoto’s photographs from his latest series: ‘pre-photography time-recording devices’ and ‘early modern’. the exhibition is on view from now until july 30th, 2014 at their paris gallery space. the edition of the revue is available in french and english at numerous locations worldwide, including sotheby’s, gagosian gallery, walther koenig, fondation beyeler, 192 books, ursus books, hennessey + ingalls, los angeles county museum of art, and directly through the cahiers d’art website.
