WY-TO architects places contemporary vernacular house in corsica’s countryside

designed by WY-TO architects, ‘contemporary vernacular’ is a holiday house in the south-east of corsica, the largest french island in the mediterranean sea. this architectural monolith has been developed in harmony with its immediate context, both in the use of materials from the region and for relying on local expertise for the craftsmanship. its thick walls are made out of stones while all windows and doors use local wood. the concrete floor has been cast using timber planks revealing its genuine pattern. 

the house revisits the traditional sloping roof generating space to add a mezzanine over the kitchen

on one hand, the external look of the house reveals an ensemble deeply rooted in its vernacular context, while on the other hand, the interior layout and design atmosphere suits perfectly the contemporary lifestyle of its inhabitant. this approach combined with high efficient mechanical equipment ensure the project is sustainable and environmentally friendly.

the social area consists of an open space that accommodates the living and dining room and the kitchen

from the living room, the house seems to be perched in the trees

the construction mixes the use of traditional building materials with innovative design

the stones found on the island have been configured to give a feeling of a house that erodes form the the land

the house is equipped with a pool and a wooden deck for perfect holidays

a covered outside dining area can be found in the terrace 

the monolithic-shaped house sits in harmony with its immediate context 

the house has views of a typical corsica atmosphere with mountains in the back
