in the heart of a hidden courtyard in paris’ 10th arrondissement, WY-TO architects have refurbished an artist studio-cum-gallery into a light-filled space in which the painter can work all-through the year in a naturally-lit and comfortable environment.

designed by WY-TO architects –a young firm who has been nominated for the europe 40 under 40 award— the artist studio is housed inside a glass canopy dating back to the 1900’s. the generous site with high ceiling heights has been subdivided into different programs to lessen the use of heating during the winter. the concept of ‘workshop within workshop’ was applied in the development of the project to maximize natural light. this was demonstrated in the fan-shaped geometry of the new volume that has been inserted at the center.

the insertion also offers a kitchenette space

a series of bi-folding doors open and close to allow the studio to become one space. in addition, the white volume combines the use of polycarbonate material on its skylights and doors in order for light to diffuse inside. on one side, a staircase leads behind and to an upper level for the display of paintings. this exhibition space on a mezzanine adds an extra element to the addition, while providing an overview of the general studio.

‘the expression of the workshop echoes the lines of the canopy which he declines according to multiple processes: rhythms of the glass roof and the facades with polycarbonate  elements, fine lines of the railings and luminaries. thus, the new workshop naturally fit s into its setting of light.‘ – WY-TO
