the seattle space needle, one of the most recognized landmarks in the united states, is set to launch a major renovation project that will subtly transform the 55-year-old icon. the multi-year venture, which has been named the ‘century project’, is being overseen by architecture firm olson kundig and will focus on the building’s preservation as well as its modernization. work on overhauling the famous structure will begin later in 2017.

the understated renovation will update the space needle’s physical systems and enhance the view with the help of floor-to-ceiling glazing. the privately funded project will maximize views from the pinnacle of the tower, while the restaurant level will be re-imagined with a rotating glass floor revealing unprecedented downward views of the structure. in order to preserve the building’s original architecture, olson kundig worked closely with seattle’s landmarks preservation board to ensure that the renovations of the alterations would be imperceptible from afar.
the new enhancements would not alter the profile of the space needle
key features of the renovation include glass structural barriers that will replace the wire safety ‘caging’ on the outer open-air observation deck, which has been designed to match the flow of the building. externally, canted-glass benches will be affixed to alternating glass barriers, while internally floor-to-ceiling glass will take the place of low-level exterior walls creating uninhibited views from the moment guests step off the elevator.

an open circular stairway made of steel, wood, and glass will wind down from the observation deck to the restaurant level below. a glass-floored oculus will be positioned at the base of the new staircase revealing views of the needle’s steel superstructure. adam d. tihany of tihany design is working on the interiors for the restaurant, which is expected to open in mid-2018.
