rooted into the abundant, wooded grounds of the island of chappaquiddick in massachussets, boston-based firm peter rose + partners designed a holiday home for a young family. the natural material choice was integral to the design of the property, where it is intended to be reclaimed by nature and at the same time, stand out gracefully among its context.

comprised of four, flat-roofed structures which includes a boat house. the site is bounded by the atlantic ocean to the west and by a well-protected, shallow bay to the east. each volume has been clad in a western-red ceder and its orientation purposely wines through an oak and pine forest without damaging the trees.

a narrow and long wooden deck leads to the boathouse, sitting on four thin concrete columns, and stealthily sited among pine trees. the house works in plan and section to offer remarkable views of nantucket and the sunrise over cape pogue bay.

standing as a collection of column-free pavilions, where the façade isn’t clad in cedar, fully operable glass windows have been installed to slide open; leaving nothing but unobstructed views of the coast. the glazing system have also been strategically placed to promote natural ventilation and works in concert with the structure’s radiant heating and cooling to modulate the residence’s living spaces.
