hong-kong based practice one plus partnership (ajax law ling kit, virginia lung) has sent us images of ‘wuhan pixel box cinema’, a multiplex theatre in wuhan, china. treating the basic element of a tiny pixel as the basis of the design, the project seeks to fully immerse the visitors into the realm of motion pictures by creating a visually-arresting motif out of the square-shaped units.

fabricating a thematic cohesion through pixels, furniture units and programmatic zones are defined by building up boxes of different heights: the cashier counter, food display cabinet, serving counter, seats and tables are created by cubic protrusions that holistically read as a collection of three-dimensional pixels. a feature display wall in the entrance area creates a dynamic surface of extended box forms that also presents the name of the cinema in a subtle but dramatic fashion.

in the box office grand hall, a large conic envelope created from over 6000 pieces of stainless steel panels forms a habitable space that fully wraps around the viewers. the reflective nature of the material produces a multiplying optical illusion that blurs the inhabitants sense of space. aiming to generate an atmosphere that references the digital elements of films, the design explores multiple ways in which to present the seemingly two-dimensional unit.
