in the middle of the atlantic ocean, on the remote portuguese island of azores, local practice m-arquitectos has completed a private dwelling that is fully integrated with the region’s smooth terrain. in order to minimally impact on the dwelling’s surroundings, the program of ‘rosto do cão house’ is organized across one superterranean level, with extra floor space provided below grade.

as well as responding to the topography of the site, the home also takes its distinct form from external sightlines, with volumes oriented to frame specific views. internally, an east-west axis connects the living room with the master bedroom, while the northern edge of the plot contains four programmatic boxes that comprise an additional bedroom, an office, a kitchen and a laundry-room.
