kourosh rafiey connects architecture + nature with sohanak swimming pool

the ‘sohanak swimming pool and spa’ by kourosh rafiey is located in a private garden in north-west side of tehran. the project sits on a flat area atop a small hill, with mixed views towards the city and gardens. ‘at first they wanted a swimming pool inside of the main building on north-west side of the garden, and there was an old pool for irrigation that was almost deserted,’ the designer states. ‘for better use of the garden and beautiful landscape, we decided to expand this pool and build a small building including sauna, jacuzzi, and a spacious terrace for diving and sunbath.’

the idea develops an interaction between architecture and landscape. therefore, the whole building and nature simultaneously are wrapped into a continuous surface which is connected to the pool from one side and green area from the other. the interstitial gaps are filled by the water, suggesting that the organic world becomes a part of the built environment. furthering this connection, the structure and the large deck that surrounds it is emphasized through their reflection in the liquid’s surface.
