kolab and koreo architects revitalizes timber boathouse in norway

sited in a small village in the west coast of norway, this project by kolab architects and koreo architects saw the renovation of a small boat house in vikebygd. formerly used as a storage space for boats and fishing equipment, due to the slow down of the fishing industry, many of these boat houses have been converted for personal and leisure usage.

its specific location is presented with regulations regarding size, use and appearance, therefore this dichotomy between the regulations and the introduction of a new leisure culture forces an old typology to take a new form.

measuring at 40 square meters, the renovated structure has been extended backwards to form a terrace with a winter garden. clad in timber with a sheet of polycarbonate sandwiched inbetween. this layering system is finished with each panel of wood angled in a way to provide outward views, while maintaining privacy, but furthermore allow for the light from within to subtly diffuse out of the structure to produce a transparent, glowing effect.

the straightforward and flexible floor-plan features a central gathering space with a kitchen and fireplace. the timber envelope is continued within with an exposed system that also serves as shelving and alcove seating. additionally, one side of the structure has been installed with an automated door system, allowing sections to fold upwards to reveal the external landscape.
