sitting as five interconnected vernacular volumes, this single-family summerhouse has been designed by malmö-based studio lindvall a+d led by architect jonas lindvall. based on the west coast of sweden, the response to ‘villa N1’ reflects the typical barn structures and materials recognized in the region. providing a contemporary perspective, the 190 square meter home has been clad entirely in horizontal timber planks.

the single-storey dwelling has been divided into five volumes organized in a way that they each protrude and recess at different depths to one another. focusing on clean lines and refined materials, the interior is spacious and embodies an apparent scandinavian aesthetic. together, the pavilions form a rhythm based on the different depths. the spatial organization sees the children’s bedrooms and master bedroom based on either end and the open-plan communal spaces at the core.

there is a clear organization that distinguishes the living, dining and kitchen within the communal space

the spacious interiors open up to the garden where the subtle overhang of the structure forms a sheltered porch inbetween. the austere and simple exterior enabled the designers to make use of luxurious accents and finishes inside. the master bathroom has been carved completely from carrara marble, while pietra serena stone floors can be seen in the hallways, living rooms and on the outdoor terrace – establishing a seamless link between inside and outside.

the objective of villa N1 was to create a building that is rooted in history, while at the same time be contemporary
