a tessellated pattern on the rear façade of this extension is seemingly interrupted to show an arched, cave-like outline to the master bedroom window. the renovation project of a victorian terrace residence completed by hook turn architecture,  ‘quarry house’ takes cues from the history of its local area of brunswick east in melbourne.

the history of the area is addressed by hook turn architecture through the brick and quarrying industries upon which brunswick was founded. the upper floor recalls the local bluestone industry through a figurative representation of naturally occurring bluestone formations. this is reflected in the new addition through the cracking and shearing in geometric arrangements. this upper storey is clad in folded zinc panels which recall columnar basalt.

the private residence is conceived of as two stacked boxes; the ground floor brick box and the upper storey bluestone box. the cantilevered form also provides shade to the house’s interior during the summer and invites low hitting natural light in the winter. the approach of organizing the second storey volume at the back which is north facing, this has led to the intervention to be completely concealed from the front.

the internal planning has been arranged to allow each room to have the best access to daylight, with a centrally located courtyard delivering light deep into the plan and also acting as an extension to the dining room. meanwhile a robust material palette has been used for the interiors with a particular focus on durable finishes and furniture sourced from independent designers.
