in the spanish city of seville, two geodesic domes have been constructed in the orchard of a local school. while the smaller structure — made from PVC blinds — measures four meters in diameter, the larger wooden dome is twice this size, with an S-shaped bench made from adobe extending outside the enclosed space. as the relatively young plot lacked usable infrastructure, the intention of the project was to build a shaded area for student congregation.

the initiative — which was led by ctrl+Z and scenotekniaB — focused on two techniques: geodesic structures and superadobe. an important aspect of the project was education, allowing local people to learn new skills and construction methods. the larger dome was constructed in just two days, using 290 wooden boards taken from pallets to enclose a diameter of almost eight meters. the project was developed, and will be used by, both students and adults of a local neighborhood association.

fireproof canvasing covers some of the polygonal openings, with strategically selected apertures left open. in this way, the design provides shade from the region’s hot sun, while ensuring constant lines of sight from the school building. inside the geodesic structure, the flooring — which has been elevated to avoid flooding — contains nearly 600 buried glass bottles filled with water. this method improves the ground’s thermal mass, which, in turn, stabilizes the floor’s temperature and helps regulate thermal comfort.

the entire process of construction is designed to be carried out with very simple constructions, so anyone who would like to participate, could have done it perfectly, since learning it cost less than five minutes,’ explains gianluca stasi of ctrl+Z. ‘this was the philosophy of the project, our goal, that everyone could participate.’ the scheme was developed as part of luces de barrio 2016. read more about the initiative on ctrl+Z’s website.
