blending naturally against the parkland landscape, architect and beekeeper frank marcus of marcus architecten has constructed compact pavilion structure on the grounds of goffert park in nijmegen, the netherlands. named ‘the bee pavilion’, the space has been derived especially for the beekeepers association to serve as a place for sharing knowledge and simultaneously maintain their beehives.

the organic design is visualized as series of curved, cylindrical pods of varying sizes. clad in a locally sourced light timber paneling and each topped with a green roof; the volumes hosts three functional spaces. from the entrance, the first space serves as the classroom and continues to unfold onto a light-filled area where the bees are kept (apiary). maximizing its sun-drenched location, the pavilion utilizes openings and daylight to promote the life of the bees and at the same time, support the park’s verdant greenery and wildlife.
