a tropical forest surrounded by cornfields?
grimshaw architects  believe that biologically inspired designs can help
to reduce the environmental impact of buildings. earthpark
in eastern iowa, USA will feature an indoor rain forest, a 600,000-gallon freshwater
aquarium, an exterior prairie and wetland exhibits.
the main dome will enclose about four acres and stand
more than 150 feet in the air. the park will feature alternative renewable
energy systems such as wind and solar power.
completion is scheduled for 2010.
board member philippe cousteau, the 26-year-old grandson of noted filmmaker
and marine explorer jacques cousteau, thinks that aarthpark will help
showcase solutions for controlling global climate change.
critics think that the developmental costs of this project do not outweigh the likely benefits.
(just imagine the energy bill of a tropical biodome while the air outside is 20 below zero. )
