architettura matassoni shifts surfaces to create cantilevered villa in italy

taking into consideration the preferences of the client for ninety-degree angles and flat surfaces, architettura matassoni have designed this residential building located near arezzo in italy. the plan was organized around a patio that functions as a central court at the edge of which the home’s life takes place. this compositional logic allows for a visual reciprocity between the environment and its many possible views.

 by shifting some surfaces, the cantilevered structure was created

the living area and the kitchen and dining area are in direct contact with each other and with the outside spaces by means of a remarkable visual permeability, partially filtered by the leafs of bamboo plants settled in the center of the patio. the rooms are located on the first floor, having a more private setting and with a natural ambiance due to the direct contact with the sky that was generated by cutting linear slots off the roof.

the view from the street gives an insight to the whole architecture

during the construction, other client’s choices were decisively achieved like the use of total white and the simplification of the material choice, which was reduced to plaster for all vertical surfaces in combination with metal panels and stone slabs. for the external flooring, wooden surfaces were used in the patio while bodies of water surround the entrance path. the villa is equipped with low-tech solutions that ensure the internal microclimate control in a passive manner through the natural flow of fresh air from the green external areas.
