sumiou mizumoto and yoshitaka kuga of ALTS design office have developed ‘suehiro house’, a scheme which allows a family to live together comfortably, balancing shared living accommodation with occupants’ desire for privacy. located in an old street lined with low-rise residential buildings, the property is exposed to the surrounding neighborhood, consequently the design team crafted a series of spaces that both embrace its context and offer necessary levels of seclusion.
approaching the home, one passes through the entrance into a double-height atrium which connects subsequent volumes. this central living space provides direct access to a tatami room, a kitchen and dining area, a washroom and the master bedroom. at the upper level a brightly lit children’s room encircles the building, sharing a constant visual connection with the floor below. the home’s large eaves block the strong summer sunlight, while welcoming in winter sun during the cooler months.
