on the italian island of sicily, local practice amore campione architettura has renovated and expanded an existing farmhouse. the design seeks to respect the building’s traditional setting with only a few colors and materials used throughout the scheme. the end result is a mix of forms and tones that interact with the region’s historical context. the project comprises four main parts: the garden, the veranda building, the pool and the renovation of the villa.
a large veranda contains a 17 meter-length pool
the garden has been completely reorganized with new circulation routes, terraces and areas of shade. a main entrance avenue takes the place of a previous pathway, bisecting two cypress trees before leading to a large patio containing a 17 meter-length pool. adjoining the terrace, a new corten steel veranda has been built, forming a flexible space that can be opened and closed according to climatic conditions. in winter, the extension can be sealed, while during summer months the walls and ceiling can be retracted, providing a pleasant setting for outdoor living.

the renovation of the villa includes the refurbishment of three storeys: a basement with a porch entrance, and two floors above ground. in order to create open plan living spaces, a large steel truss was inserted within the structure, hidden within the roof. interior wall surfaces are finished with a lime skim coating, emphasizing the natural authenticity of the home’s existing materials.
