madrid-based firm a2arquitectos has transformed a squash court into a leisure area for children in a hotel in majorca, spain, by incorporating a traditional toy concept: the kaleidoscope. the idea was to build a large scale version of it in order for kids to interact with and enjoy the different optical effects. variables such as external elements, natural light, and the people moving inside, generate a set of light effects and reflections that intervene the space and create multiple worlds for the children inside.

the sobriety of the ancient squash court was altered by a large element that passes along the space: the giant kaleidoscope, whose hexagonal section is 9 meters in length and 2 meters high, allows the children to walk inside and become an active part in generating the effects while perceiving a strange sensation of weightlessness on the outdoor park.

the main instance that wraps the ‘kaleidoscope’ is characterized by its pink hue, color whose relaxed excitement powers feelings, making it another element in the creation of the dreamlike space. all of this was enhanced by a random pattern of white circles of different sizes, which are home to various applications such as lighting, storage, slates, and caches.
